"A red herring" nghĩa là gì?

"A red herring" có từ herring là loại cá trích, sống ở vùng Bắc Đại Tây Dương. Loại cá này khi được sấy thô sẽ biến dạng quý phái màu đỏ và có một mùi hôi đặc biệt. Từ thế kỷ thứ 19, những tù nhân người Anh thường dùng cá trích sấy khô này dùng bôi lên những chỗ ngược với lối chạy trốn của họ để các con chó săn bị lạc hướng và không đuổi theo họ được. Vì thế "a red herring" được dùng để chỉ một sự việc hay lý lẽ dùng để đánh lạc sự chú ý về một vấn đề khác.
